Previously I had been using VLC fluidSynth to export my midis to other formats, until recently when I discovered that it was ever-so-slightly out of tune and TiMidity actually played my songs without clipping.

That was a major plus.

However, there was one thing that fluidSynth did absolutely awesomely, and that was play percussion. Every time it played cymbals they must have lasted at least one and a half seconds, and they sounded great. But when I play the same midi in TiMidity with the same soundfont, it always cuts off the cymbals, playing them for maybe half a second.

I even tried assigning all the drums to a different soundfont but they still got cut off. Is there any way I can get TiMidity to stop doing this? I know I could export the drums from VLC and the melody from TiMidity and put them together in Audacity, but that's kind of a pain, especially when TiMidity should seemingly be able to play cymbals right itself. I was able to compile that and get it working just long enough to confirm that it didn't fix the percussion problem.

Using this sound font there are some really major improvements. Not that the original instrumentation that shipped with machines of the day didn't have its charm.

I love the fact that we used to literally ship midi files around for game music - it's such a technically elegant approach and because it could be thought of as just 'musical markup' it was even trivial to add compositions to websites - when we had severe bandwidth limitations.

While there's no question that the addition of a mastering step and the ability to ship perfectly 'rasterized' music to mix metaphors has meant we have a perfect rendition of the composer's intent and is vital for a lot of musical expression, there was always something fun about the idea that music directors were practically composing symphonies to be played by individual orchestras on each user's machine. I think.

Someone who knows about orchestra music and performance correct me if you think what I said was off base. A composer specifies which instruments play what, as a general rule. I've also found it hilarious to listen to the MIDI version of popular songs.

They always sound like kids music.

(software synth) MIDI: how to get it working?

I agree, shipping full audio tracks is somehow too "easy". I pretty much only have old C64 music running non-stop in my headphones at work. If it was remastered to not sound like a SID-chip I wouldn't get my fix. You should listen Machinae Supremacy. They are using actual SID hardware while composing their music. I would be eternally in your debt if you uploaded that FatBoy UO track : I had to go listen to the original after reading your comment and I can't believe how great it still is after all these years.

To continue that thought, in an interactive setting, shipping music in source form seems like it would offer some creative possibilities thinking of things like iMUSE here. And this is part of the problem - the latter part never developed. Sample playback is a lousy form of musical expression. I want a pianist AI that plays Beethoven the way I like.

Nice work! The current format I use "patch" files has a separate file for each instrument, so I can lazily load only the necessary instruments needed to play a single song. Ideally for a web midi player if you are able to generate all the general midi sounds using fm synthesis like the old 80s midi boxes you could have a really tiny download size but it would still sound really cool.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to do this, but I'm not sure my audio abilities are up to it. Do you know of any existing JS projects that do this?

I'm a windows 7 user, so obviously for me, getting any source ports midi to sound properly is going to be difficult. I mainly use risen3d and zdoom. Timidity stops working in zdoom every few levels. Fluidsynth seems to work ok, but only works in zdoom. I've tried using the bassmidi config program and the vista midi picker, but the settings never seem to "stick".

Is there any difference between using a soundfont in fluidsynth compared to the other two? Should it sound the same? I'm not using the weeds gm3 soundfont, but one that's about meg - I know that weeds is meant to sound best for doom midis, but most pwads' new midis sound better to me with the one mb one. I think that sometimes timidity and fluidsynth "slip" back to using the weeds soundfont, too, because I sometimes have trouble telling the difference.

As for if the different MIDI synths sound different, I'm pretty sure that soundfont quality depends on what is used to play the soundfont. I'm considering buying a cheap sound card that supports soundfonts in hardware in windows 7. I thought if anything, it would sound better. Depending on the soundcard and driver versions, hardware soundfont support often has clicks and dropped notes.

Hardware soundfont reproduction is also variable. I have the sequencer version, and some instruments sound a little weaker than on other soft synths. Soft synths can load soundfonts over a GB in size, but some soundcards cannot even load soundfonts over 32 MB.

fluidsynth vs timidity

It is possible for a soundcard to load large soundfonts with a Windows registry edit, but even that only allows up to MB soundfonts to be used. When I was putting together a spec for my current machine a couple of years ago, I was recommended by a number of people to not bother with a separate sound card because "the ones on motherboards these days are good enough" and "you don't need a separate sound card unless you are doing something really technical with music".

So, I specified a machine using the on-board RealTek sound system. Almost immediately I realised that doing so was a mistake and I was having sound issues that I had not experienced since before I bought my first Sound Blaster card "back in the day".

I went out and got myself a Creative X-Fi Titanium and I have not had a significant sound related problem yet, other than the ability to record "What-U-Hear" doesn't seem to be supported in Win 7. So, personally, I am still a big fan of buying a reasonable quality add-on sound card rather than relying on the on-board system. I had the opposite experience. Having always used onboard sound, in I decided to listen to people saying a dedicated sound card would allow for significantly better sounding stuff overall, and bought a new computer with one A Creative X-Fi Titanium.

Couldn't notice a single difference in sound quality. However, the card had major problems on my system apparently caused by Windows 7 and driversthere would be loud crackles every now and then emitting from my speakers.

After days of browsing the Internet and trying dozens of fixes without anything ever working, I gave up and ditched the card. Sound still sounds as good, no more issues.

Auzentech marry their own board designs and driver's with the Creative X-Fi chipset.

If you want to go a stage further then the X-Meridian 7. What exactly do you need the sound card for? Thanks, I've downloaded the trial and I'm giving it a go. It certainly works but I have to say I found it a little fiddly to set up and use in the way I want with the various bits of software I use but I will persevere.

Most of the time, all I want to do is record a short bit of sound being played by the system and then use sound editing software to mess around with it. I have actually found a bit of a messy work around - if I run FRAPS and set it to record a video of something in the background usually just something running on media player and then pause whatever FRAPS is recording, I can then produce the system sounds that I want to grab and then load the captured video into the audio editing software.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.
